The135 drawings
made by Frenkiel in Beirut between 1944- 1947 are the work of
a young man, highly susceptible to the singular experiences which
had been thrust upon him, and one who had already known, far more
fully than most ever do, the whole spectrum of human predicament.
The art of Stanislaw Frenkiel was then fired - as it was ever
since - by a burning curiosity, the minute curiosity of a novelist,
concerning matters of human psychology. This propensity, coupled
with the very sharpest attention to idiosyncracies of appearance,
accounts for the sheer conviction of every one of these drawings,
however abbreviated.
It was a wise decision of the artist, willingly
complied with by Dr Bushra Fakoury, the present owner, to keep
the works together as a complete collection.
